RMIT Bachelor of Interior Design (Honours)

2nd + 3rd year Interior Design Studio

Overview: The studio celebrates the idea that surfaces are situated in a dynamic and changing flow of forces. This studio asks students to practice attentiveness through various mediums, materialities, and energies. Through attentiveness to how surfaces are situated in the world – as material, spatial, and temporal situations – this studio asks students to research, explore, and experiment, through a range of ongoing iterative processes. Through observational techniques accompanied by the production of arrangements, interventions, exhibitions, publications, and presentations, ‘interior’ is approached as a situation in becoming – affected, and effected.

Context: This studio is a provocation for experiencing and perceiving the materiality and temporality in the world. The studio considers and explores how surfaces are open to material, durational, and ecological forces where they are in becoming, with the potential to be lively. Interiors are often understood as space that exists inside things such as buildings or in relationship to architecture. This studio offers up a different framing through attention to surfaces and their material and spatial potentials and how an ‘interior’ is produced in relation to surfaces and sites. Through the process and production of site-responsive spatial propositions, students will learn to value material, ephemeral, spatial and temporal encounters concerned with surfaces, as a critical and spatial practice of relevance within contemporary interior design practice.
